Modeling bacterial resistance to antibiotics: bacterial conjugation and drug effects

چکیده
Abstract Antibiotic resistance is a major burden in many hospital settings as it drastically reduces the successful probability of treating bacterial infections. Generally, associated with fitness reduction and selection pressure from antibiotic usage. Here, we investigate effects conjugation, plasmid loss, drug responses on population dynamics sensitive resistant bacteria by using mathematical model. Two types drugs are considered here: M that kills only N both bacteria. Our results highlight larger dose longer dosing interval may result higher prevalence while they do opposite for N. When delays administering initial second doses incorporated, demonstrate lead to when or administered time remaining at lower latter. switching agents during treatment course different strain characteristics significant impact

Dielectrophoretic assay of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
The dielectrophoretic collection spectra of antibiotic-sensitive and antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis have been determined. These indicate that in the absence of antibiotic treatment there is a strong similarity between the dielectric properties of sensitive and resistant strains, and that there is a significant difference between the sensitive strains before and after...
متن کاملBacterial resistance to antibiotics: it's our problem.
All professionals who are concerned about the health of children need to be aware of the significance of recent developments in bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This seemingly esoteric area has become a major problem that the Centers for Disease Control has labeled a public health emergency. We professionals have caused the problem. Antibiotics became available for general use in the 1940s ...
متن کاملBacterial resistance to antibiotics in vivo. I. Incidence of resistance.
In studies of the interactions of antibacterial agents, it became important to try to elicit bacterial resistance to antibiotics in the experimental animal. Since this proved to be unexpectedly difficult, attention was directed to the process by which bacteria acquire resistance during exposure in vivo. The present paper is concerned with the incidence of streptomycin resistance in strains of s...
متن کاملPersistence and resistance as complementary bacterial adaptations to antibiotics
Bacterial persistence represents a simple of phenotypic heterogeneity, whereby a proportion of cells in an isogenic bacterial population can survive exposure to lethal stresses such as antibiotics. In contrast, genetically based antibiotic resistance allows for continued growth in the presence of antibiotics. It is unclear, however, whether resistance and persistence are complementary or altern...
متن کاملBacterial resistance to antibiotics: enzymatic degradation and modification.
Antibiotic resistance can occur via three general mechanisms: prevention of interaction of the drug with target, efflux of the antibiotic from the cell, and direct destruction or modification of the compound. This review discusses the latter mechanisms focusing on the chemical strategy of antibiotic inactivation; these include hydrolysis, group transfer, and redox mechanisms. While hydrolysis i...
